As one of the first awards of the season, the Golden Globes red carpet has long served as one of Hollywood’s most anticipated fashion showcases. While many celebrities have graced this prestigious event in memorable ensembles, others have provided cautionary tales that live on until today.

The ceremony’s reputation for being more relaxed than the Oscars has sometimes led to fashion choices that were indeed missteps, such as Melanie Griffith‘s rainbow dress in 1987, Beyoncé’s princess gown in 2003 and Diane Kruger’s Marchesa dress in 2005.

Ahead of the 2025 Golden Globes on Sunday, WWD looks back at the less successful style moments from the ceremony’s history.

Beyoncé

Beyoncé wore a princess-inspired gown by Les Habitudes with floral details at the 2003 Golden Globes. The singer was invited to the event following her supporting role in “Austin Powers in Goldmember,” released in 2002.

Sharon Stone

Sharon Stone wore a punk-inspired skirt set by Versace for the 2003 Golden Globes.

Whoopi Goldberg

Whoopi Goldberg won a Golden Globe in 1986 for her first feature film, “The Color Purple.” She received the award in a casual yellow look with sweatsocks and sneakers.

Melanie Griffith
