Since its inception in 1944, the Golden Globes red carpet has been an influential stage for Hollywood glamour, setting the tone for the entire awards season. Every year, stars from film and television are encouraged to showcase their sartorial sense of style at the event, creating some of the most memorable red carpet moments in entertainment history.
From Marilyn Monroe‘s sequined showstopper in 1962 to Lady Gaga‘s periwinkle Valentino tribute to Judy Garland in 2019, these fashion choices have captured the zeitgeist and reflected pivotal moments in both fashion and film history.
Ahead of the 2025 Golden Globes on Sunday, WWD looks back at the most memorable ensembles to grace the Golden Globes red carpet through the years.
Marilyn Monroe
Monroe wore a sparkling gown designed by Norman Norell to the Golden Globes in 1962, where she received the “Henrietta” Award for World Film Favorite. Notably, the star didn’t put her arms through the armholes and wore it more as a halter neck. In 2022, Kim Kardashian wore the same dress for a Met Gala after party.
Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez wore a cutout dress by Valentino featuring color-blocked sections for her first Golden Globes appearance in 1998.
Kate Hudson
Kate Hudson wore a sparkling Atelier Versace gown with a plunging neckline for the 2002 Golden Globes.
Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie chose a sequined Versace gown to celebrate her nomination for her directorial debut “In the Land of Blood and Honey” at the 2011 Golden Globes.
Lupita Nyong’o
Lupita Nyong’o wore a red Ralph Lauren cape dress for the 2014 Golden Globe Awards red carpet. She was nominated for her role in “12 Years a Slave.”
Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga received her Golden Globe for Best Original Song for “Shallow” in 2019, wearing a periwinkle Valentino ballgown. The dress was inspired by a similar look worn by Garland in 1954’s “A Star Is Born.”
Michelle Yeoh
In 2023, Michelle Yeoh took home the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” She received her Golden Globe in a sparkling Armani gown.
