Sheer Style Is Trending on LACMA Art + Film Gala 2024 Red Carpet With Viola Davis, Eiza Gonzalez and More

Stars converged on the red carpet on Saturday at the 2024 LACMA Art + Film Gala in Los Angeles. A fundraiser for film-related acquisitions, educational programming and exhibitions at the museum, the event featured Charli XCX as a performer. it was also co-chaired by LACMA trustee Eva Chow and actor Leonardo DiCaprio. Director Baz Luhrmann and artist Simone Leigh were honored, and Gucci sponsored the event.

While the likes of Sofia Richie Grainger embraced minimalism by way of a draped gown, others like Blake Lively stood out wearing a chainmail mini-dress from Tamara Ralph with a matching silk taffeta cape. Still, a number were seen in a red carpet trend that has become a staple over the last few years: sheer.

Chloe Sevigny

Chloe Sevigny chose a brocade jacket for the gala. Her look hailed from the Saint Laurent spring 2025 collection and included a shimmering multicolored jacket alongside a lace high-neck blouse and a layered mini skirt that also featured red lace. She also wore a pair of slingback shoes from the brand featuring green jewels on a gold capped toe.

Laura Dern

Actress Laura Dern wore a sheer black gown with an upper half made of black lace. Featuring long sleeves, the piece tied at the neck and included a plunging neckline. For the bottom, the look featured a pleated skirt that grazed the floor. Dern paired it with gold earrings and a muted red lip.

Viola Davis

Viola Davis opted for a sparking black gown. The piece included a large sheer cape that emerged from the shoulders of the dress with its deep v-neckline. The gown was sequined throughout. She wore her hair curled with dangling, drop earrings.

Eiza González

Eiza González wore a draped orange gown. That look billowed in the wind and featured a long train. The entire piece was made of thin, sheer fabric done in pleats. She wore it over lingerie as well as strappy stiletto sandals.

Aurora James

Designer Aurora James selected fellow designer Chemena Kamali for the night, wearing a piece from Chloe’s fall 2024 range. From Kamali’s first show, it is a long ruffle dress made of silk lace. It features long sleeves which are tiered as well as a tiered skirt. The white dress was worn with brown suede boots.

Devon Carlson

Devon Carlson wore a black skirt featuring a high, thigh-baring slit. For a top, she wore a long-sleeve fully sheer crew neck over a bra. She paired the Gucci look with black slingback shoes.

Reign Judge

Reign Judge went super-short: the model wore a lace halter top over a pair of short shorts. In addition she wore a black blazer, stiletto sandals and carried Gucci’s Jackie bag. She styled her curls in a messy updo and wore gold hoops from her ears.

Lee Ji-Ah

Like Viola Davis, Lee Ji-Ah wore a dress with its own cape. Her off-the-shoulder, tulle look was from Cucculelli Shaheen. It featured a fluted skirt as well as embellishment throughout the design, like silver and gunmetal pailettes, crystals, metallic threadwork and micro seed beads. The hand-embroidered design also included layers of silk chiffon and silk georgette.
