Over 50 Years of Team USA Gymnastics Women’s Olympic Uniforms: Mary Lou Retton, Simone Biles and More Who’ve Repped Red, White and Blue on the World Stage

While Olympic uniforms for Team USA’s gymnasts have changed over the years, they’ve almost always included patriotic flairs.

In recent decades, popular sportswear brands like Asics, Adidas and Under Armour have vied for the opportunity to dress star athletes like Mary Lou Retton, Kerri Strug and Simone Biles at the Games, their images (and uniforms) being plastered on magazine covers and cereal boxes alike.

Below, see how gymnasts from the 1940s to the 2020s have repped the colors of the American flag on the world stage.

For the 1948 London Olympics, women’s gymnasts wore white high-neck leotards with red and blue stripes across the front. Each uniform was also emblazoned with an American flag emblem.

While the women’s gymnastics uniforms at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics didn’t incorporate the red, white and blue color scheme (as seen here on athlete Cathy Rigby), they did feature American flag patches just below the neckline. Rigby would go on to portray Peter Pan in the Broadway show of the same name, and she’s been widely credited with popularizing gymnastics in the U.S.

Japanese sportswear brand Asics created the iconic American flag-inspired uniforms for gymnasts at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. At those Games, Team USA took home silver medals, with Mary Lou Retton scoring a gold medal in the individual all-around category.

“The hottest thing out is that leotard,” Rich Kenney, marketing director for the U.S. Gymnastics Federation, told United Press International at the time. “The amount of exposure it got is fantastic. Mary Lou wore it on Johnny Carson and she’s been in Time, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated. That’s more exposure than any leotard has anywhere.”

As is the case at most Olympic Games, there were multiple uniform designs for the U.S. women’s gymnastics team in 1992. This specific leotard, seen on Betty Okino, Wendy Bruce, Kim Zmeskal, Shannon Miller, Kerri Strug and Dominque Dawes in Barcelona, featured a long-sleeve silhouette decorated with gradient stripes of silver, red and blue rhinestones. Team USA scored bronze in the women’s all-around competition.

Team USA Gymnastics partnered with GK Elite and Under Armour to design athletes’ uniforms at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Covered in Swarovski crystals, the above design faded from metallic white to red, while the Under Armour logo and USA lettering flank each side. The top of the leotard, once again inspired by the American flag, featured a navy panel decorated with stars and bedazzled red stripes.

In Rio, the women’s team won all-around gold, with Biles taking home the individual all-around gold medal.

Inspired by Old Hollywood glamour and Parisian high fashion, GK Elite used 47,000 Swarovski crystals to cover eight leotard designs for Team USA gymnasts at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Shown above on Jade Carey, Sunisa Lee, Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles and Hezly Rivera, these red, white and blue uniforms include variations of red stripes and a blue panel covered with stars.

“We are excited to continue our partnership with USA Gymnastics and unveil our extraordinary designs for the gymnasts representing our country at the Olympics,” Matt Cowan, chief executive officer of Elite Sportswear LP, the parent company of GK Elite, said in a statement. “We take pride in having our brand worn on the sport’s biggest stage.”
