‘Moulin Rouge!’ Costume Designer Catherine Zuber Revisits The Musical’s Big Fashion Moments

“Moulin Rouge! The Musical” made its Broadway debut in 2019, led by an original cast that included Karen Olivo as showgirl Satine and Aaron Tveit as the young bohemian Christian. The splashy musical went on to win ten Tony Awards in 2020 across acting and creative categories. One of those winner was show costume designer Catherine Zuber, who created colorful and fantastical custom outfits for the world of “Moulin Rouge!”

Since opening in New York, the jukebox musical — a stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s film — has included productions in Australia, London, South Korea, Japan, Norway, the Netherlands, and other countries worldwide.

“It doesn’t matter where I am — what city or what production — it’s such a great show, and it gives the audience so much pleasure. All of us who go into theater, that’s all we can hope for,” says Zuber. “With ‘Moulin Rouge’ I feel it’s quite a rapport between the performers and the audience.”

Here, watch as Zuber gives WWD a closer look at some of the musical’s biggest fashion moments, from Satine’s sparkling performance outfits to the colorful Can-Can skirts worn by the dance ensemble, and hand-painted costumes inspired by the artwork of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
