Lürssen Delivers Three New Superyachts—With A Combined Length Of 1,227-Feet—And Others Too In 2023

The German superyacht shipyard Lürssen has a well-earned reputation for building the many of the largest and most opulent superyachts in the world. But it appears they built them ALL in 2023.

Of course, I’m exaggerating. But…their first delivery of 2023 was the 479-foot-long Opera that was designed by Terence Disdale.

The second was the 295-foot-long yacht Norn that features an exterior designed by Espen Oeino and an interior designed by Dölker + Voges.

The third delivery of 2023 was Project Luminance that the company simply describes as a “private yacht.” A 433-foot-long “private yacht” that is! It’s obvious their commitment to owner privacy is one of the many reasons why 32 of the top 100 largest yachts in the world have been built by Lürssen. In fact, they’ve built 12 of the top 20 largest yachts ever built. And they have more yachts ranging from 250-to-450-feet long in build now.

Like one of my personal favorites—the brand new 269-foot-long Project Cali that features an exterior design from Lürssen’s in-house exterior designer Jim Robert Sluijter that also emerged from the shed this year. The yacht also features an interior designed by RWD for new owners that will be taking final delivery in 2024.

Or Project Jag that also emerged from the shed in 2023 to be delivered to her highly experienced new owner

Not only new-builds

And if that wasn’t enough, Lürssen also completed a major refit on-board the legendary, 318-foot-long Carinthia VII in 2023. Carinthia VII is quite a milestone for the shipyard since she was originally built by Lürssen in 2002 and returned to have a massive refit last year.

After being one the lucky ones to get a tour aboard Carinthina VII during the 2023 Monaco Yacht Show, I can say with authority that the level of craftsmanship, engineering and styling of the refit is top notch.

“I am very proud that, after building Carinthia VII, we have now been able to participate in her new lease on life with an extensive refit,” says Lürssen’s Peter Lürssen. “She remains a very particular vessel and is a testament to the solidity of our German engineering and manufacture.”

And since massive refits are a core business for Lürssen, the company has taken on some other interesting projects lately too. “A refit is not just about necessary maintenance, it can also be a way to completely transform a yacht,” says Alberto Perrone, Refit Sales Director at Lürssen. “We enjoy the very complex rebuilds and refits, we like it when owners come to us with problems to solve, we want to do the things that other yards steer clear of,” he says.

In fact, more than a dozen yachts between 220 and well over 300 feet (like the 216-foot-long offshore rescue and support vessel—named Project UFO—is having extensive modifications and maintenance work done at a Lürssen facility now) have had work done at a Lürssen facility in 2023.

“Much of the existing structure, hull and systems are to be retained,” Alberto Perrone says, “Project UFO is not a yacht in the traditional sense, but neither is it an explorer or support vessel. We are well positioned for such a conversion. The engineering capabilities of Lürssen and our experience is of great benefit to the project.”

I wonder how they’ll be able to top that in 2024?
