BYD backs out on plans to build lithium plant in Chile


The plant was one of a series of measures planned by BYD to strengthen its EV supply chain overseas. By Stewart Burnett

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD has canceled US$290m plans to build lithium cathode plants in Chile, citing a collapse in global lithium prices. The project was not only a part of Chile’s strategy to boost domestic lithium processing, but also part of BYD’s ongoing efforts to diversify its global supply chain into other regions.
